Our Beneficiaries

Our beneficiaries are turtles and their marine environment. Off the 7 known turtle species only 2 species namely the Loggerhead and Leatherback nest on our northern KZN Coastline (and there migrate post the breeding and hatching season and 3 additional species visitors to our coastal waters).

Ezemvelo Kwazulu Natal Wildlife, a division of the Kwazulu Natal Province and a government organisation with reduced funding from both central and provincial government and is the primary mandated conservation and monitoring organisation who run the program and have done since 1967. This includes communities and in particular 40 rural community members and an additional 30 rural Turtle Guides (all from within the breeding area communities and residents. 100% black from previous and present impoverished communities) who provide monitoring and protection services to the breeding turtles (leatherback and loggerhead turtles) during the breeding season between September and April the following year. The area of breeding is between Cape Vidal and Kosi Bay on the KZN Northern Zululand of the Republic of South Africa.
